  • Young Writers' Work Published

    Published 09/03/16

34 of our pupils have recently had their work published in a new book produced by the Young Writers, entitled ‘Grim Tales – Welsh Legends.’ Pupils were set the task of re-writing a popular fairy tale/ story but in only 100 words!  A special celebratory assembly was held on Friday where pupils were awarded certificates for their fantastic achievement and pupils read their work aloud. It was a very proud moment for the English department and Mr Jarvis. This book is placed in libraries across the country and is now sat alongside ‘Poetopia’, another collection of our pupils’ work in the school library which saw over 100 of our pupils’ poems published.

We have recently entered the ‘Poetry Trials’, another national competition, with over 200 of pupils entered and with a chance of publication. This is due to be published later this year. Next up – ‘Spine Chillers’ - another word limitation task where pupils need to put their imaginative writing skills to the test and produce a scary story of only 100 words. The closing date is 31st March and we look forward to reading the work that our creative pupils produce.

  • Computing Workshops for Year 9

    Published 01/03/16

Today Laura & Richard from University of South Wales (Technocamps) came to our school and put on workshops for the year 9 students who wanted an insight into computing. There was one workshop in the ICT suite where we used scratch and KODU.  The scratch workshop allowed us to make a space invaders game and in KODU we explored its features and learnt some of the basics using the Xbox controllers - this was great fun!

There was a second workshop based on the programming language, Python. First we learnt the basic commands and then we were given the chance to make either a basic game or a conversion programme. We enjoyed the tasks given to us in the workshops and we now have a good idea of what computing is and how it can be used. We thank technocamps for coming to our school and giving us the opportunity to experience basic computing.

Written by Tom, Joel & Ieuan - Year 9.
